The Metropolitan Railway – the forerunner to today’s Metropolitan Line – actually made more money from property than it did running trains.
It coined the term ‘Metro-Land’ in 1915 to promote suburban living. The name was further popularised by poet Laureate John Betjeman and even by writer Evelyn Waugh, who created the character Margot Metroland in his early novels.
