At the height of World War II Goodge Street shelter become the headquarters for the American military in their planning to fight Nazi Germany.
It was here that General Eisenhower planned the Normandy invasion. The station witnessed a busy stream of generals, air marshals and admirals including Field Marshall Montgomery.
A scrambler telephone was installed on which Eisenhower regularly spoke to Winston Churchill. On D Day June 6th 1944 three telephone lines were put in place between Goodge Street and the British and Canadian beaches Juno, Sword and Gold.
